Dining room table dilemma!!

My dining room is 12 x 9 1/2 and I ordered a 60" round table. Should I size down to a 54"? This table is the main table n my home and I want as much seating as possible. My living room and dining room are opened up to each other and u come right into my living room from the porch door. I really want the larger table but will I regret it.

60" is tight on the 9 1/2' dimension side. That is a small dining space. It is rectangular so I'm sure many designers would not have recommended a round table if you were trying to maximize seating. Take your room dimension, deduct the table dimension, divide the remaining amount by 2. That should be at least 32" in my opinion, but it is tight nonetheless. More would be advisable. 30" is minimum passage required, and when you pull out the chair you won't be able to get by... hope that helps :) I would probably have opted for a rectangular table so you could use up more of the 12' and kept the table depth narrower.

I totally agree with Mona. You really shouldn't even be considering a 54" round table, much less a 60" one. You need a 42" x 72" rectangular table. A table with a leaf would be possible if the table can extend into the living room when necessary. You need 36" of space behind a table for regular traffic when the table is not in use and the chairs are pushed in. When people are seated at the table you'll need 30" from the table for squeezing between someone seated at the table and a china cabinet or wall.

You could seat 8 people at a 48 x 48" square table.

iloveittwo, you can still change your style! Just consider a rectangular or square table with perhaps metal legs and a glass top? Or a trestle style table? There are a lot of changes you can make that will radically change the look of the room but maintain the shape and size table that works best.

What is it about the round table that appeals to you? If the talented designers here have some ideas, perhaps they (and those those just like to help shop!) can help you find something.

It's just a change and I guess I got attached to the round table and now Im loving my choice and now to change is gonna take a love for a rectangular or square shape. If I find another lovely table I will get over the round.

Well, just some random thoughts. #1 is somewhat rustic/industrial. #2 - LOVE this table from Restoration Hardware. #3 - Glass oval? #4 - Iron base?

Or a beautiful glass top with chrome base? This specific one may not be the correct size, but it is just for a basic idea.

That's a great looking table that I used in a model home. It's well priced and would make your room look quite spacious!
