Slate is porous and will require alot of maintenance, there are many porcelain tiles that will give you a similar look.

I would suggest you look at porcelain tile that resembles slate instead of the real thing. As mentioned above real slate is very porous and requires maintenance. With the porcelain you can get the look without the trouble. Same for the shower . Check out this tile. http://www.unitedtile.com/products/HOME/PRODUCTS/PRODUCTS%20-%20PORCELAIN/EDMIX.aspx

I actually have slate tile in two showers. It's not stacked stone but 12 x 12 squares on the floors and walls and the 1 x 1" squares and the shower floor. This is in a cabin so it isn't used every single day but so far it's held up fairly well. We have sealed it only once and didn't use an enhancer. We've been using it for 4 or 5 years but again, not every day. By stacked I'm thinking of a stacked stone fence or foundation, is that what you mean? It's a rustic look that I love.
