Wood countertop
bscherbApril 21, 2013
We are purchasing a house with a very large wood topped island (4+ ft x 8 ft). The finish has worn through and we need to refinish it. What is the best way to do this? I have never had a wood counter before.

I have not had a wood counter, but, it seems pretty impractical to me (for reasons you can now see), unless it were maple or something similar that you were going to use for cutting on. I would personally consider changing the surface to something more durable.

I have never thought that wood counters and water are a good combination. Many here on Houzz disagree with me and have stories to back their claims...but your counter tops are a case in point. The finish has failed and the onset of mold and eventual rot is heading your direction. An oil finish may give an easier maintenance than the polyurethane that was used on your top....but I hate the idea of wood near water.

Lots of maintenance oil finish will be the best not poly not recommended for food safety it has to be applied on a yearly basis to fix this one you need to sand it all and remove all the finish and stain off and restain it and apply the oil finish
