don't know your planting zone - but we put ligustrum (texana) along back fence - in San Francisco area - served nicely for many years - In the Pacific Northwest arborvitae often serve as a screen

joanbilt - how much room do the ligustrum need? Do they have a fairly tight root structure or do they need room to spread?

they do need moderate room to spread - I planted the shrubs about 3 ft apart. Many years ago.

Check out podocarpus (also know as fern pine). There are many cultivars, so it is likely you will be able to find one that will grow in your region. Some of the cultivars grow in a very upright, narrow fashion and make great hedge plants. Depending upon where you live, you may be able to find a cultivar that does not lose it's leaves in winter (they keep their leaves here in Southern California) Go to your local nursery. They will be very well versed in what plants will grow best in your area. Good luck!

Thank you for the plant ideas. I live in east of the pacific northwest in the palouse area of N. Idaho and I think I have seen the use of texana as a hedge in a few yards. I guess I was thinking of a quicker solution then plants.. ie: maybe canvas attached to the fence, sun shade sails. ???

Outdoor privacy screens are available, but you could probably make one by attaching canvas or another resilient fabric to a simple wood frame.
