Need help for future living room - Elements to match this rug?

laurenunrealApril 23, 2013
I just signed a lease for a new apartment with extremely low square footage. 285 sq ft in total, but there's a loft which adds about another 80 where I will put my bed. I need help in decorating the living room/dining area. I have a beautiful purple rug that has been in my bedroom (and won't fit in the loft) that I'd like to use, but not sure what couch or furniture will go with it.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

mp gave you a very good idea. Because you have a yellow/orange tint in the floor, I would advise staying away from the warm colours such as red, yellow or orange. Stick more to silver, purple, black, but add muted purples - such as lilacs/lavenders to break it from being too monochromatic
What fun! My first apartment was like this and I had a ball!!!

What a great space! Instead of a sofa, go for a loveseat or settee. You could bud your dining table up behind the sofa, this will help you divide the two spaces. You could then use the additional dining chair as additional seating in your living room.

I would go to IKEA if I were you and get your basics....then add some other interesting elements as far as art along the way! Go to some art festivals this spring/summer....go to the universities around before they are out of school and get some great deals on student art!

Thank you, thank you! @Ed I have this inkling that its bamboo flooring but to be honest, I'm not sure. @mpoulsom one of my current roommates is an amazing artist and attends the SMFA, so I will definitely be hitting her up before our lease ends.

I have the kivik sofa and love it.....i have 2 sections with a chaise on one end...you could get 2 sections and chair or 2 sections and the chaise and split them up....they have many slipcovers to choose from and are washable. I got the off-white one and use many colorful throw pillows against it. Looks fun and modern! I also use tree stumps for end table bases and a piece of square glass on top. I don't know what your budget is like, but mine's slim! ha! I try to use things that are cool looking but free or of little cost. Tree stumps are free!! You can leave them natural or paint them a color. And you don't HAVE to put glass on top. I've seen them used in a grouping of 3 together at different heights and they looked really nice.
What's your lifestyle like....do you bike? hike? ski? Is there equipment that you will need to store somewhere in the apt.? Because some of these things can be incorporated into your decor.

laurenunreal, DD lives Somerville/Cambridge line near the Museum of Science. She makes that run to IKEA in Stoughton about once a week. She just picked up some things for me to help me stage a cottage I'm selling. I'll see if I can locate the picture I used for inspiration.

the Karlstad may even be a better option for you as far as a sofa goes because it has room underneath for storing things in shallow boxes??? I say go this weekend if you can and take a gander! Lots of great space-saving ideas there for smaller living arrangements! :) I think the Karlstad comes in a gray color.

Yesterday at Home Goods I saw a wrapped canvas with all the names of the Boston T-stops. It is about 4' x 6'. Not $$$$.

hahaha! well my friend asked me why i was obsessed with stumps not long ago....but i love them for a lot of things! they make great pedestals too! A glass of wine would be the perfect thing to have before you go stump hunting or jumping i think.

Wine and stump jumping? Sounds as bad as beer and friends with paint brushes.

You could go with grays for chairs or sofa to go with rug--it looks like dark and light gray in it--yes/no?

Grey, white, or black would do well.
Keep simple with mainly solid colors to maximize room size and not conflict with rug. couple of large throw or floor pillows come in handy for extra seating without taking up a lot of room.

Go with 1/2 size table with 2 chairs for dining.

Couple of canvas art...and sit back and enjoy.

The stumps are great looking ;-) I think though for me for this size apartment I'd look more for cube tables that have storage.
