boring exterior

ameliasmom1April 27, 2013
Planning to get new siding on my house this summer, but I would also like to create more interest since the house is a very "plain" style 1952 cape. I was thinking about having an overhang built onto the roof above the gable. Any ideas for how I can add more architectural interest and stay within a conservative budget?

I think you have a lovely little house there - sort of the equivalent of a little black dress. I would go with what you have, which is really elegant in its simplicity: remove the shutters, which are just detracting from that, and get a simpler front door - maybe just a single-lite french door, possibly in a color you like.

Does your house need to be painted? I like the white.

What I think could be improved is no shutters at all. They are vinyl, not authentic and don't fit.

Front door again isn't authentic leaded glass.

Healthier and larger foundation plantings, try cherry laurel (which fills in and does what a foundation plant is supposed to do.)

Put mullions in your windows and either/remove or raise your window treatments to open up the entire window.

I also think your house looks charming. I would find a more classic door. Yours looks very 1980s and the style doesn't complement a cape. I love your window boxes. I would add some fuller shrubs to the front to fill it out a little. No shutters is a good idea. Very cute though!

I would be more apt to refer to your home as ranch style. The architecture of your home isn't that of a Cape Cod; your house would have to have these elements:

Story-and-a-half house, gabled ends, symmetrical fa├žade, shingles or wide clapboard exterior, and a steep roof. No overhang, a center chimney, mullioned windows, true, functional shutters.

You have a very nice home.
