Painting over wallpaper?

Buying a home built in the 70's! Of course there is wallpaper everywhere! Can you paint over it or do you have to tear it down?

Whether you can or can not paint over wallpaper is moot. The question should be why would you want to? Take it down. I say if you are going to do something- do it right. Instead of taking the time to prime, take the time to take it down. You may be surprised what is behind that wallpaper. I discovered mold once. Wallpaper can cover multiple sins!

I'm in the take it down first camp also. Always best to start with a fresh wall, patch up any holes or defects, and do it right the first time.

Remove the wallpaper. Normally, it is pretty quick to do. You'll get a better surface for painting and no wallpaper seams will show.

I would remove it for the reasons listed above.
