My first thought is white for a more uniform look!

Take a look at this kitchen of the week from a couple months ago. A similar look with the wood and white only in reverse. There may be other changes you could make that would make this a unique and great looking kitchen!

For contrast I would choose a gray for a contemporary look, a cool blue for a seaside look or a muted green tone for a cottage look.

Yeah, I would do white to make the overall effect less 'choppy'. With cedar, double check with your paint store to see if you need to seal it first - primer alone may not be enough... you might have to shellac it or something before putting a water based paint on it, even if a semi-gloss finish. I'm not sure

I see you've already got some great wood and white kitchens in your ideabook.

Personally, it feels like your floor is a bigger issue than the cabinets. Sorry - I know that wasn't your question.

Yes the whole room is in need of up dating. I'm trying to make do with small fixes till I can afford a total redo. I like the idea of painting everything the same color as the doors but would also like to try a more modern approach. I will look for pics of what I mean and post.

Maybe you should change some other elements and see if you like the current cabinets better. You may like them better if there were other updates.

Shanna Hurd. Unless you dislike white you will achieve the most cohesiveness with it. Sounds like you may be interested in a more funky approach. Hold off and continue pouring through photos for inspiration. Hope this helps.

I would consider a very dark grey and get new hardware. Your appliances are black, your furnishings are black. I think it may simplify the space and make it crisper.

I like the idea of grey and thought of painting the island and cupboard with desk grey and the rest white. Any thoughts on that ?

I don't see why not. I would just be careful not to use a shiny finish.

It seems you have enough white all ready, unless you don't plan to leave the white counters and backsplash, You need to choose more items so you are working towards a goal of what you want, if you go all white now, I think it will be too much white, but if for example the counters and backspash will be changed soon, then fine.
I like the two tone color, just not those colors, gray on gray, gray on white, or soft colors like blue or aqua if that 's the style you want. ... sorry just saw another post come through where you said you like gray... perhaps a darker gray on on part, like the island, and white or white and lighter gray on the rest? It looks good to have a totally different color all together on the island too... I've seen many photos like that on houzz and also on the DIY or better homes and gardens sites.
