How to add color/decor while still matching?

I have been working on my living room lately. I like the current colors and how they are warm but don't want it to feel too dark. How can I add more modern touches or colors without going overboard?

How about four square colorful art pieces? Two on each side of the wall. Remove the sofa pillows and use the art as your color and a more contemporary look.

A series of pop art? Pets, children, favorite actor?

I look at your two pictures and realize there is no linkage between one or the other. Go into your room and take a photo of as much of the room as you can. Turn it to black and white. You will see large blocks of dark and large blocks of white. What you want to do is to add smaller negative blocks to break up the dark blocks (eg the sofa and coffee table) and the clear blocks eg the mantelpiece and above the sofa.

These examples show you how the colour has been distributed between dark and white (ignore the colour scheme)

I have a piece of art picked out to go on the wall, a large old window pane that I'm putting pictures in. What can I do to the coffee table or mantel to add color? A large vase? Or different colored candles ?

Either of those would work (but don't go for a tall vase, just a wide bowl perhaps)
