Back Door Knocker

April 29, 2013 in Design Dilemma
My back door has the 9-pane window. It is going to be the door that most visitors come through and I have a ring door knocker I want to install. But I don't know if I should put it at the standard height, to the left of the window or put it centered below the window. Help, please!

My rule of thumb when things seem to get complicated unecessarily, let them knock on the side of the door that's the widest, probably above the doorknob somewhere and ditch the knocker.

Below. Grew up with this style (I am only 38, hehehe) It should be on the door.

Major thunderstorm! Can't get to house. Will try tomorrow. Can't complain because we desperately need the rain.

I'm sorry the photo of door is not a close up, it's all I have in my ipad. Can you even see it behind the column?

Hi Beth, from your second photo with the blue door, it looks like the knocker should go under the window, center. However, it still doesn't quite fit, to me. Is it an option to have a door bell instead ? :)

Only if there is such a thing as a wireless doorbell. I bought this knocker thinking it would go on the door frame, to the left of the door. But when it arrived, I realized the design is for it to be installed on the door. I can do without either and put the knocker on the front, which is a craftsman door with a dentil shelf, I just thought it would be cool to have something at the back door to keep the neighbors from opening the door and yelling for someone! We live in the country - that might not actually happen though! Lol

Wireless doorbells do exist and they're not expensive.

Beth, even without a knocker or doorbell on the back door, I have a feeling your friendly neighbors would either go to the front door, or, just knock. :)

I have had two wireless doorbells. Keep them protected from the elements (batteries got wet). End of doorbell number one.

Second doorbell, more expensive, but there is a lot of "give" and one has to push hard. Most people expect just to barely touch the button. Guests end up shouting my name over the back fence or calling me with their cell phones.

I am thinking of installing a cowbell instead!

Ed, just saw the two pics of doors you posted last night. We had very slow service b/c of storms. Love them! Wish I could have those...unfortunately I'm learning that building this house is all give and take. Thanks so much for your help with this
