Frameless shower door people are telling me that it's iffy...

pouletApril 29, 2013
I have my heart set on using Ann Sachs Lucian glass subway tile in my shower/bath alcove. After talking to one tile guy, as well as a really good frameless shower door installer, I'm afraid to go through with ordering my glass tile. Tile people are saying it's hard to cut and breaks easily and the door installer said that the door clamps don't do well with the glass at all. I only need a stationary "half" door. If anyone can tell me of any experience they've had with this, I'd really appreciate hearing about it. I really don't want to give up the pretty glass tile unless it's going to cause nothing but pain. The bathroom is too small to deal with a shower curtain and I really don't want to do a curtain. Help me, please?!?

I have no experience with using glass tile in a shower with a glass shower door...because my tile guy and my shower door guy both said it was dumb. So I don't do it.

As a contractor I know what your tile guy and shower door installer talking about. Glass tile IS challenging when it comes to cutting/drilling - but it doesn't mean is not possible. I use it often as backsplash in kitchen and in bathrooms. First, your tile installer needs to have a supper sharp glass cutting blade, made specifically for cutting glass - then his cuts will look as good as if they were made by the manufacturer. As far as installing a shower door, if possible use a different material (like a matching piece of the vanity countertop) where the shower door clamps/brackets suppose to go, and if that's not possible try consulting with another installer who have some more experience with glass tile.

I will say, we notched the glass tile around the Euro hinges and grouted. Solid backing installed before tile backer for secure hinge install. Zoomed in photo.

We've got glass splash back for our shower and have frameless glass shower. Ours is perfectly fine and they had no trouble with doing it.
