I have all oak steps. I would like to paint the risers the Newel post and the balusters bright white, and stain the treads and handrail as dark as possible. Any suggestions on Primer paint and stains would be greatly appreciated...you guys are my last hope..

Personally I think the advice of one of the sales associates at a professional paint store would be a better source for information!

depending on the stores around you but use oil base primer( i really like benjamin moores fresh start )for the oak you will need to clean the oak with tsp and scuff sand it before priming. for paint satin impervo or advanced are great paints for this application. As for stain i'm a snob i only use Dailys stains i do not like minwax i have used old masters its ok.what stores are around you ?

Thank you all for responding. I took your advice and went in to the local Benjamin Moore store. The person I spoke to just painted his risers white two weeks ago so he was able to give me some great advice. I am still trying to figure out what to do about my stain, I will go to a flooring place in the morning.
