Need help with my staircase

My house was built in 1987 so of course the staircase is carpeted and has beautiful wide stringers all he way up; however, they are the typical honey oak color. I don't want to refinish the stringers at this time but I am staining the treads on the stairs a dark walnut. My question is "What color to paint the risers?" The walls in the staircase are a pale yellow. I really want a punch to the stairs, but not way out there kind of a punch. Also, the stairs do not have a "landing" per se they curve so they have the 2 wide "pie shaped" stairs in the curve. If money were no object I have lots of beautiful ideas, but trying to do this on the cheap so any creative ideas besides plain white would be greatly appreciated.
