Ideas for a pergola
May 5, 2013 in Design Dilemma
I have a lovely pergola with a wisteria growing over it. We want to make it weather proof and we are thinking we should add a clear roof extending over the top at the same angle as the roof and leave the wisteria. Anyone got any comments or have photos of where this may have worked.

No pics but it will look great nothing better than watching the rain under a covered porch area.

Hey Pearl - I smile when I see your posts, you are either writing in free verse or Haiku!

I love Wisteria, but I worry that the 'duvet' effect you will make between the clear roof and the pergola will not burn the wisteria. Plants tend to take moisture from the air as well as from the ground. Why don't you ask a landscape architect who knows their plants well enough as it would be a pity to lose it?

Just looked up Haiku
I always carry notebook and pen
Write something like Pam Ayers

We sadly don't have a wisteria over our pergola
Have a Passion flower
And some blue sola lights
Will take on board what you have said regarding
The duvet effect
I have them with a nice cupper in my
Jim jams
Silly me that's a duvet day

Please take into account that wisteria is a seriously detrimental plant to have near your house. It will invade and tear apart all manner of construction and its weight will collapse all but the stoutest of pergolas in the long run. I advise clients to enjoy its beauty on a structure some yards away fro the house!

thanks for all the feedback- we keep the wisteria well away from the house -it is now 20 years old and we cut it several times a year. I did wonder about the sun burning the wisteria through the polycarb roof.

I am unfamiliar with polycarbonate magnifying the suns rays ad burning plants. In my experience, it is the lack of air movement and being in direct sunshine that makes it feel hot. Solar heat gain is an issue with greenhouses as the heat generated by the sun will not dissipate. Try an experiment. Buy a sheet of polycarbonate and put it over a part of the wisteria...see if it burns!

I have had wisteria and found it not to cling on to any thing or be invasive and seemed to me to be a fragile plant and I would check with a good greenhouse about the sun condition's etc
