Exterior Choice
May 6, 2013 in Design Dilemma
We have a higher end home on the water and are wondering if we use Vinyl Shakers versus Cedar Shakers will that hurt the resale value. Do consumers still prefer natural materials or prefer no maintenance?

I'm an architect so I default to natural materials. But on my own home I was looking at real wood cedar shingle cladding and compared long term maintenance cost and went with fiber-cement shingles! I had to decide "stain" vs "paint" and since we wanted a painted house, the decision was easy. We are 12years and counting with the paint on my home. Had the painters paint the trim only last year, shingles still look good! So to answer your question in my "rambling" way, I would talk to a few local real estate people. "Perceived" value is important to factor in along with how long you plan to live there!
