Paint the woodwork?
May 7, 2013 in Design Dilemma
Just bought a house - built in 1970s. It has natural wood woodwork and doors throughout every room. I kind of want to paint the woodwork - will that ruin it? Is natural wood trim dated now?

In a 1970s house, if you would prefer it painted, then I think you should have no qualms about painting it. In a much older or historic home, you'd probably want to preserve the natural wood trim. My choice would be to paint the trim, probably white.

Yes, do paint it if you don't like it. It will freshen up the look of the house.

Many homes from the 70's had that wonderful golden oak trim...that so many homeowners want to be rid of immediately! I would say that everything is dated...from the moment it is installed...but that doesn't help you. A picture of what the trim looks like would help determine whether it is a good idea to paint or a travesty!

Painting the wood work will update and do wonders for the house. Also, when picking out a white, probably best to not go stark white. Some what of an off white will do well and will still be plenty white. When picking out white paint pick the undertone in the paint carefully to your taste of color. Good luck!
