Help with kitchen design...L or U shaped
May 9, 2013 in Design Dilemma
We are in the initial stage of a home addition and are adding 14x44' across the back of the house to make a new kitchen/eating area/family room. Our builder suggested making a U-shaped kitchen at the north end of the space off of the mudroom. The space is 14x14 with a 4' x 4' island and 3' between island and surrounding cabinetry. I am feeling that this is going to be really tight and would like an L-shape with a bigger island and 4' walkways. Does 14'x14' usually provide ample storage? The room will be open on one end to the eating area. We have 5 kids who are frequently in and around the kitchen which is why I wanted the bigger island to begin with... what do you think?

Hm.I agree with you,L would be the best shape, especially if you have 5 kids.
Lucky you,I have 6 kids and two adults are in the small ugly house I have :P

I agree with you. It will be roomier. 3' is a bit tight.
