Just found this chair on the side of the road. How should I restore it?

I was driving to work this morning and spotted this chair on the sidewalk. I just HAD to stop and pick it up! It's pretty badly beat up but seems quite sturdy. It would be the perfect occassional chair for my entryway. I was thinking of sanding it all back and painting it black and reupholstering the seat in a geometric patterned fabric. I'd love to get some of your ideas though.

Go for it! It was free, you have nothing to lose. I'll bet it will look great.

Love it! Road kill furniture is the best kind. you could paint it in a bright colour with a cream or black upholstered seat to make it stand out. Depends on the rest of your decor. Charcoal grey would also look lovely and classy. (BM Kendall charcoal)

The black and white would look fabulous, but will it go with the rest of your furnishings? I found a few different options by doing a simple google search.

Have you discovered Annie Sloan paint? No pre-sanding needed before you paint your piece. Her color chart is amazing, and you can paint almost anything.

Don't put too much into it, it is not a treasure. I think you should go with Margret B suggestion and paint it a fun color red, with black highlights on the face of the insert. Here is my fabric suggestion. Masculine yet pretty.

Hi all! Just thought I might give you an update and show you how the chair turned out. I sanded it all back and used a darker stain on the wood and reupholstered the seat in a piece of Schumacher velvet I found. I'd love to know what you all think.

Looks fantastic. I'm glad you put a darker stain instead of painting it. Good job!

That is absolutely gorgeous. You are inspiring me. I've done a lot of different kinds of arts and crafts in my life, but wood re-staining still makes me tremble in fear. You've inspired me. If I pick something up on the side of the road or at a garage sale this summer, what have I got to lose?

Beautiful! Love a good "curbside shopping" find. I, too, love that you stained rather than painted it. Classic fabric-rich stain-priceless.

Thanks guys! It's very humbling to read comments like this from actual industry professionals. Haha Sandy, you aren't the first to ask! I'll add you to the wait list :P

Great job on your chairs fsattar. You've given them a new lease on life. They look brilliant.

Can't wait to get stuck into my latest project. Hardest part is deciding how to do it.
