Personally, I would have a professional painter come in and clean the cabinets thoroughly, fill in as much of the graining in the oak as is reasonably possible and then prime and paint the exterior of the cabinets and the backs of the doors and drawers. Then put on new pulls. While the painters are there, they could look at the hinges to see if they can be removed and replaced, but sometimes that is not possible. The good news is that you don't have the arched doors to contend with which would date the cabinets more. I would make sure that the toe kick and shoe molding are both painted to match the cabinetry. Right now they stand out with the black and white.

I updated some stock oak cabinets with standard latex paint in a satin finish. Changed the hardware and had my cabinetmaker replace the hinges with hidden hinges....this was the most difficult part of the project because of the outside profile of the door. You do see the grain of the oak through the paint. I think it works well for darker paint colors. If, however you are hankering for a smooth finish, you would have to fill the doors and I would guess that even professional painters won't guarantee a completely smooth finish (at a reasonable price) Much luck!
