need help to paint or keep stain on woodwork

My fireplace bricks and book cabinets-molding are walnut- i am opening kitchen to this room-cabinets will be white with stained island-any idea

If your woodwork is of high quality, very good condition, with beautiful natural grains, I'd suggest keep the stain.
Otherwise, you can consider painting. But it still depends on the overall balance of your surrounding space. Photos would be very helpful. :)
