Need to update kitchen cabinets.

I have a huge kitchen with "European style" cabinets....i.e. plain off-white with a natural wooden strip across the bottom (used as a handle).
Can I resurface the cabinet doors...maybe frame them , then paint over them? I know I can probably just buy new cabinets but can't afford it now.

Show us a picture of the existing cabinets. It sounds like they might be a laminate product which would be difficult to alter.

Could you paint the wooden strip the same color as the door, then add some hardware? Would just be a matter of drilling holes. I would suggest a nice long bar handle. I think it would be really nice and quite easy. If you try to paint laminate you'll be frustrated with the process and disappointed with the results. Good luck!!
