What can I do to update the look of this fireplace without removing the stone front? We will be hanging a tv above the fireplace.

Love this wall. Look up "Mid Century Modern" in the ideas book. There is a lot of new furniture with a retro vibe in stores today or salvage the genuine article and restore. I would love to see photos of your progress.

"don't fight your architecture" ... your home and fireplace has a great mid-century vibe, which is a very 'hot' look right now. If you embrace that style with your furnishings, the fireplace will fit in just as it is (okay, maybe loose the paneling overhead, but somehow even that isn't bothering me in this space).

-- Your fireplace stone is just fine and the easiest way to bring it into the 21st century would be to paint the paneling and the wall next to it the color of the grout. The paneling is really orangy and visually demanding. Painting it would eliminate it from the space. The horizontal lines of the stone help to widen the long room.

You also might consider painting the beam to match the ceiling. Its placement is a bit awkward and is dividing the space in 1/2.

Furnishings could have a titch of the 50s look but I wouldn't go overboard.
