Need to "glam up" my new jeweler's chest

bklyndanielleMay 24, 2013
I bought a jeweler's chest today to use as a jewelry armoire. I've been trying to "glam up" my bedroom (with some success) and am wondering how to glam this piece up. (It's unique and gorgeous but not very glam.) I was thinking of getting a cut-to-ordered mirrored, beveled glass for the top. Another option might be to put a feminine tablecloth or material on the top. Thoughts? (The photos were taken at the antique shop where I purchased the item. This is not my bedroom.)

Here's one more photo (with the linen-bottomed drawer closed).

What is your colour theme in your room. For something like this, I can see either painting the entire chest in a metallic silver; or painting various draws a selection of pastel colours or finally. staining or lightening some of the draws to add an eclectic upcycled feel to it.

Is the top wooden?

@shortped, the top is a gorgeous wood - you can see it better in the 3rd photo, above.

@ASVinteriors, thank you for the suggestions. Would painting the piece ruin the patina of the wood if I wanted to remove the paint at some point?

One other question - could I use some kind of colored contact-type paper or would that look cheap? (And would it ruin the wood when I removed it?)

Yes it would. As you said you wanted to glam up, I thought you would not mind painting this chest. However you say the wood is gorgeous. So pity to ruin it. I don't think this style works with a mirrored top. But perhaps have glass cut and then add a lovely wallpaper below it. You could try cutting brass or metal to slip into the handle pulls to make them stand out. But that is far as I would go if you want to preserve the wood

Seems strange how the top and the shelf are different tones from the drawers. I think you should at least paint part.

@asv - I like the glass/wallpaper suggestion as well as the brass pulls. Where would one go to get cut brass pulls?

Try home depot or lowes first - if not, you can usually by the sheet metal in small sizes there and then try a locksmith, metal worker?

@shortped - for some reason, the photos make the top appear much lighter than it is (though it is a different color/wood).

I love this primitive piece, but that is my taste in antiques. As for ideas on how to make it glam, I, too, like the glass top idea. You could put a beautiful lace under the glass. Or a collection of old letters, postcards, souvenirs, etc. But if that is not the look you want, wallpaper would allow you to get whatever strikes your fancy. Can you post photos of your bedroom and of this piece once you get it home so we can see it without all the clutter from the shop?
