Something is not right

Steve HillJune 6, 2013
I love our living room, but something about the fireplace and mantle seems wrong, especially the height of the drywall surround in proportion to the mantle. I want to do something to change the size of the mantle and keep the warm overall organic modernist look of the room.

The inner firebox is surrounded by cut 14" slate, and these are surrounded by a painted drywall box framed over 2 x 4's, measuring 51" tall and 77 5/8" wide and 6 1/2" deep on the outside.

The mantel is a single piece of wood that 1 3/8" high, 79 7/8" wide and 7" deep.

There is a travertine tile baseboard around the whole room, including at the foot of the fireplace. I want to leave that intact as removing it would require repairing floor tiles which I am unable/unwilling to do.

Your suggestions are appreciated

I kinda like it. Very clean line modern. definately need bigger artwork on the wall though, and less chachki's on the mantle.

And I might paint the surround a shade of taupey grey pulled from the stone ...

You can leave the fireplace, surround and hearth just like it is....your problem is balance!! Add height and weight above mantel!!! will make a huge difference while maintaining the clean lines of the FP

Thanks Brenda and Beck and Gray Interiors. I like the idea of changing the paint color of the surround.

What do suggest above the mantel for height/weight? The stuff on the mantel and the zen frame are easy to replace/relocate.

Yeah, I agree that a huge painting over the fireplace would really make it stand out. I do like it. I'd also add larger accent vases, etc. on there, or mix the smaller pieces with a few larger ones. Also, putting some dried grasses or sticks in a taller vase would lead the eye up, instead of across. Good luck!

I like the proportions but dislike the idea of a drywall surround. Why not have a fireplace made out of wood - perhaps reclaimed lumber - and it will look a lot better. I also agree with the other that you need one large statement piece above the fireplace that draws your eye up and it will fix the proportions.

I agree with painting the surround in a shade of grey but you have to be careful to get the right complimentary shade. The mantel looks out of scale - can you add some trim under it or replace it with something heavier? Also some large art and ditch the little glass things were good ideas. Love the green :)

I love it- I think the issue is just placing something larger above it.

I think the mantle could be much thicker, but I agree with Kelly and others that once you place a nice large piece of art ( love the art that Kelly selected by the way.... spot on ) you will look at your fireplace in a whole new light.

I'd like to see a bit more color in the artwork, but do love that piece.
