Gesso Floor Method:

Janie, I am swooning over these stunning floors. Tell me about this methodology for Gesso finished floors. So you basically thin out the gesso which is typically thick with water? Can I get more information on the method? Then how do you protect them once they have been gessoed? We bought a small house with old pine paneling everywhere. We are taking if off in some areas and recycling it to go on ceilings or serve as wainscoting here and there...I like this gesso. Its different and fresh.

For floors, you want to put 3-4 coats of an industrial strength sealer or poly-acrylic over the gesso finish.

Do you think it would be a good finish with a dog? I have bona finished floors and Bona's finish is great but I have oak now which is much less softer than Pine. Thx

Pine is softer and easier to scratch, but if you have enough coats of Bona sealer, that will help.

One more annoying question ; ) What brand of gesso did your wood floor guy use? Can you find out? If not, I understand.

I am sorry, but I do not know the brand of gesso. I don't think that will matter though.

Gesso is a white or grey paint mixture consisting of a combination of a binder, chalk, gypsum, and pigment and can be found in an art supply store. My flooring company simply thinned it out with water and mopped it onto the floor. Once it was dry, they buffed or sanded any areas that were too think and then applied 3 coats of commercial grade Bona sealer. Your floor man may need to play with it on samples to come up with a a good formula for you.
