I need advice on colours for my summer house
gingerclaire
June 9, 2013 in Design Dilemma
Hello Houzzers,

I have along narrow garden which slopes upwards to a summer house. The garden is beginning to take shape for the summer, but I would like to bring a little colour to the top of my garden by painting the summer house.

I like cheerful colours, although most of my house is decorated in muted traditional colours. I don't want it to look tired too quickly - I can't afford to repaint it every year!

How about a grey/green with white trim. Or a blue with white trim. I mean, you can paint it red or pink or yellow too, but I'd rather paint it in a muted colour, white trim will brighten it up, and add two rattan or adirondeck chairs with colourful pillows in front of the shed. It's a cute shed.

This would look cute in yellow with white trim, especially with all the greenery. A red chair with a multi colored pillow on the porch would look good.

I like the sludgy green colours - what about satisfying my desire for cheerful colours by painting the inside a different colour?

You can definitely paint the inside a bright, happy colour. That would be fab. Perhaps mousemaker has a preference, because she's moving in ;-)

Great ideas so far.....I like the idea of a whitewashed look, not too perfect in a smokey blue/green with lively trim. If you don't have a full wood door, make the trim on the glass a bright colour, different from the other trim colour.

Add a sassy mat, some bright wicker chairs and some pots of colourful flowers.....image is from a cottage I re-styled. I loved the red. Colourful outdoor rug under chairs would add to the look too......

I would add color with flowerpots going down your stairs, and slope but I have to say that it looks so charming just the way it is right now. If it were me I would never paint it. Enjoy it gingerclaire !

Charming! How wonderful! I love what appears to be an area up top just for those pops of color and outdoor furnishings! I was thinking about how the Spanish designs will place tiles vertically up the stair treads and thought, for you cottage, what about a happy Arts n Crafts style stencil?

Farrow and Ball 'French grey' or 'lichen' would be lovely - use F&B masonry paint as very robust on sheds. Used many times. Or cream, F&B ' old white' or sultry grey 'downpipe' would be fabulous with pops of bright colour. Paint the water but a dark grey anyway to hide it- looks like a London garden, are you in London?

Meant to say use Babouche (F&B) - bright warm yellow - would go great with the downpipe exterior.

To make it look integrated into the landscape and connect with nature....I would paint the body a chocolate or taupe with green trim. It will also age nicely. Add a glazed urn and plant colorful plants, like geraniums to punctuate the outdoor space and make it a focal point....

No, not London - I'm in deepest darkest Dorset! I was thinking of making myself a colourful stripy hammock to lounge around in when it's not raining.

Sharon, where can you get these outdoor mats, I like the idea!

Okay... I'm off... start baking! Could take a while before i'm there, have to fly to the States first to collect all these lovely things, then pick up mousemaker somewhere, otherwise she'll be very cross with me, and then we'll drop by at your place for tea and cake. Ah... lovely...
Speaking of dreaming... I'm off to bed.

Gingerclaire, I found this one @ Pier 1. They sell online. However, I think if you google for outdoor rugs you will find suppliers nearer to you. They stand up to weather & provide colour. Take your time, choose colours you particularly like which will also blend the house into the setting. It is very charming and I would need to see some pops of colour if it was my little getaway! Have fun.

How cute! You could power wash then stain too as another option to keep that natural feel. You could even make it look like a little cabin and then add colorful accessories like suggested above to the porch and the interior.

Does anyone have any advice on what is better, coloured wood stain (e.g.Cuprinol Shades) or paint? What sort of paint is best?
June 10, 2013 at 12:47PM

I'd say coloured wood stain. Paint is a layer on the wood, so that will peel off in time. Wood stain seeps (if that is the correct word) into the wood. But I'm not an expert. You could ask your paint supplier. And I'm sure there are Houzzers who just KNOW this stuff.
Good luck :-)

So adorable!! When carolins picks up the stuff here in the states, I'm jumping in suitcase. How about a gentle wash of color? One of the colors carolins picked out, watered down? Still has that great timeworn look with a little bit of color. Inside, bright white with pops of bright fun colors to lighten up even the dreariest day.

Quite tempted by the idea of the multicoloured one - I could pick one colour for the sides you can't see, and then 4 or 5 colours and just use the 250ml tester pots for the front...
