Corner fireplace needs some love

cayleytJune 10, 2013
So I have a corner fireplace but I'm trying to figure out ideas for a mantle with stonework. The problem is the ceiling is on an angle so I have no idea how to design it. Please help! Please excuse the photo quality.

You can make a statement by choosing to make the surround very big and high. I would then suggest hanging a large piece of artwork above it. You have chosen quite a dominant wall colour. Maybe the fireplace surround could be brown like the trim and then choose a very modern art piece incorporating blues or reds to make it a feature. I would choose blues to soften the yellow - unless this is not the colour of the walls and just the quality of the photo?

I'd hope you'd rethink the idea of going to the expense of creating a faux stone stack for a faux fireplace. If not, it would beneficial for us to see more photos of that ceiling, and the room, and give us some kind of idea of your taste, please. Are you keeping the intense yellow wall color? The head, the sea bird, a copper extinguisher, and whatever that very small hanging is, I cannot begin to assess your direction. Are you wanting to bring the outdoors in? Rustic cabin to formal, as in the photos Ms Rowlands posted, where do you think you want to go?

Thanks, the wall is actually neutral it is just a bad photo image. I like the idea of the pictures above. Their are old barn beams in the ceiling so I wanted a bit of a rustic look.

I wouldn't combine rustic (beams) with a formal fireplace surround.

Like both the photos of these fireplaces they have gone with quite dominant wall colours. I wonder whether you'd be open to keep the surround simpler rather than making it look rustic and instead give the rustic feel through the wall colour and accessories instead? What you could do is add a wooden shelf on top of the fireplace surround if you wanted to incorporate that rustic feel.
