Any idea to upgrade/replace the old fire place

Please see the photo, this fireplace is very old, would still keep it's functionality, but would like to see it's nicer and modern look, any idea?

If you want it modern, can the wall be drywalled, covering the indent but leaving the firebox open, but use large tiles in a smooth contemporary finish/design,,,,, or a straight lay or staggered skinny contemporary horizontal tile,,,or thin cut granite or marble slab,,, on the entire fireplace wall.
The wood on the floor must be temporary, right?
