Tv/rec room for Tweens
June 13, 2013 in Design Dilemma
We just bought a house and have this amazing space which will be for our daughter (13) and our son (11) to hang out in. Since the house has no basement this bonus room is the next level up from the bedrooms. We expect this is where the kids will be watching tv or playing video games during family parties and when their friends come over.

I'm design challenged. I need to pick paint colors and a rug color in the next week before we move in. The only furniture we have for this room is a tv stand/media center which is similar in size & shape to a coffee table in dark wood stain.
Im not afraid of color or texture on the walls. I want to do something unique so when kids come to visit they say "wow". The room is a large rectangle, with a sloping ceiling, 2 skylights and a large closet.

Looking forward to your suggestions!!

Will you need seating such as a comfortable sectional or are you going to add a pool table or air hockey. WII can also be very popular! I would poll your children. Young gentleman in their early teens start liking work out equipment too and sometimes girls. I know my boys liked a weight bench, weights, and a boxing whatever that thing was. Someitmes recycled exercise equipment is good choice because people frequently get it and dont use it.

Yes the room will neat seating, but right now my priority is colors. We will be moving in in 2 weeks. The room will have an air hockey table as well as Wii and Xbox game consoles.

Sounds like you're headed in the right direction with things. Do you have plans for window treatments for the skylights? I think Duette Honeycomb shades by Hunter Douglas would be great options especially if you're going to have a TV in the room. You can get them in a semi-opaque that will allow some natural light through or a blackout shade that will not allow any light through. They also are one of the most energy efficient honeycombs on the market so they will help cut down on the heating and cooling costs in the sapce.

Oopsy daisy, Fine Art for Kids
Oh wow! What a cool room. Your kids are going to love this space! Grays are great for a contemporary room, but we always suggest choosing your artwork first, then all the colors, accents, and decorative details just seem to easily fall into place after that. We specialize in art for babies through teens, but we also have a website totally devoted to art for teens! Check out our Oopsy Daisy tween/teen selections here: and be sure to also browse Wheatpaste Art Collective here: There are products for any budget: from canvas wall art that makes a more substantial presentation to adhesive wall decal posters that can be grouped for major impact and are super affordable. Here are a couple of unisex suggestions below:
We have loads more, so if we didn't quite pinpoint your kids' styles, please have them peruse our sites! Our art is produced in our San Diego studio and comes from hundreds of artists - so we've got tons of different styles. This will also make your kids feel like they're really contributing to the design of this room, making it their own.

I would paint the lover portion a happy color that both your children can agree upon, and paint the sloped ceiling a light color for a larger feel. I see you have a double closet; a useful way to save space by placing the TV and WII inside, and a safe place when the balls are thrown around (and you know the boys will) Leaving more room for what furniture and games will be placed in the room. A decorative bright carpet with lots of texture would be great. Suzanne

Get the kids involved. They will enjoy the room, so much more, if they feel that they made the design decisions. Make the room fun and crazy.
My eldest boys (10 and 12) will get a very similar space in our new house after the summer. It will include a desk where they can sit with 4 laptops, a tv with wii and a large coach.

I picked something called Rum cake which is beige, just so that something is neutral.

I think I know "rum cake". Smartstrand? Found this picture using rum cake. Love the three colors, the neutral, the white and what looks like BM bali.
