Help for Small Garden Design

I have a small front garden North West facing (Perth Australia) and placed a tree right in the middle of it without giving it any thought. It is a pretty boring sight and now I want to do something with it and am stumped as to how to work around a central tree. Has anyone got any ideas? I am thinking of some perimeter hedges to soften the wall as well as replace the small bamboo with a waist high hedge. The ground cover is dichondra - a lawn alternative which I would like to keep.

You have a striking home. I would bring in some boulders and do a rock garden of sorts with native plants: karrinyup courtyards and Ascher Smith Landscape Designs.
