Alright you creative geniuses, I have the opportunity to make the kitchen of my dreams, but I have having trouble with the function. I have very little prep space, and am terrified of scalding children going across the walkway from the stove to the sink. Can you help me design a more functional traditional space with an island? THANKS!

bepsf You need 42" clearance minimum between counters - with that in mind, you'd just have space for a 2' deep island: It's simply not the best solution for your space even if you were to remove the closet behind where your stove is located now.

You could, however, devote the wall where the closet and desk is now to storage: Refrigerator flanked by pantry cabinets, etc. Then relocate the stove to the other wall, and leave the sink where it is, but have a small peninsula come out from that wall where the dishwasher is. You might even investigate moving the doorway to the Family Room over 3' so that you could have additional workspace and cabinetry adjacent to the stove on that wall.
