I am looking for a table that will look good in my new kitchen. I would like something to lighten it up a bit since the cabinets and floor are so darlk. Also want something durable since it will be used for all meals, homework, etc.

Contemporary light wood table would provide some contrast.

I would suggest a lighter area rug and a long table, in a lighter color - maybe a light base with a wood top. But definitely something on the lighter side and an area rug.

You can use a lighter wood for the dining set or have lighter material just for the chairs. You can also use a dark wood material but add lighting (recessed) in the room.

Check out this nice set on Joss & Main. It's Paula Deen's.

What about glass? You can clean it with windex or vinegar and water fast. Since they are going to use it for homework, it needs to have a surface that cannot be indented when writing etc. Although, my sons used the dining room table ( nice walnut) just had to keep the table pad on it. They just did not like any other room. They are over 30 now and college grads so all is well that ends well.

I have a glass top table and unless you want to see you children's dirty little finger prints all over it, I would stay away from it. You can never get it clean enough!

If you're worried about denting, I would go with the farmhouse style!
