I need help! This fireplace continues upward to the ceiling which is in total 28feet. I have no idea of how to begin. The Lino on the harth is temporary and the mantel can go.

it looks like the sides are missing. i would beef up the sides of the fireplace and extend brick or stone to the ceiling. or, I would lose the mantle, beef up sides, lay brick or stone around fireplace and hearth and drywall upper to the ceiling. i would probably lose the half-hexagon shape as much as possible (ditch that mantle), since to me it makes it feel dated, but then again the brass and linoleum reinforce that dated feeling too (though you already admitted the lino is temporary). good luck regardless of what you choose to do! you might also post a larger pic of the full room to give everyone here a better feel for the space :-)

The fireplace has pewter accents. The Lino is there for a template as we are undecided on what to put on the harth. We were thinking granite or something along that line but want to make sure it's hard enough if a block of wood falls on it that it doesn't crack.

I would hire a drywaller to come in and lay sheetrock over all the plywood, then texture it to match the wall texture, and paint it to match the walls.
