I need ideas on how to cover up or redo paneling.

We bought a house with paneling in almost every room, some can stay but I want to either paint it or something. HELP!

I'm not a designer but I do know that panelling can be painted very easily. There is also other options you could fill in the lines with drywall mud to create the look of a smooth wall. I have never done this but often thought what if you took advantage of the lines and used them to create a focal wall with two or three different paint colors with just a slight difference in shades.

I (and when I say, I mean my husband) once painted an entire beach cottage of dark paneling

Did you know it is also possible to wallpaper over it? We did that, too!

We used Binz primer on it first, then couple coats of paint.

Easiest, cheapest solution to change the look of the room.

I say this assuming this is typical sheet paneling.

In a hallway, we added white beadboard over the paneling on lower half of wall. On upper section, we wallpapered. There is a liner that you install just like wallpaper except you run it horizontal, then you install wallpaper over the liner in usual vertical manner.
No believes it when we tell them.

I painted the paneling in my dining room, it had already been painted but for whatever reason the paint color they chose was chicken fat yellow. I painted it white. It is a bit of work, you'll want to degrease it first and at least one coat of primer. Huge difference!

Olldbobbi,
One house we bought had a living room that I described as "highlighter" yellow! I wonder which was brighter?

I would suggest painting it as the most cost effective and fast solution to make an immediate difference in the space. I just painted the paneling in my living room!

It was so bad looking but I think it was made worse by the rest of the choices in the room.
First thing we changed. The previous owner also had a thing for green.
Of course, I was happy to be able to change it all to what I like.

I love the description of chicken fat!

I've had similar experiences with painted paneling and agree that it will look GREAT! Go for it! Here are some other good examples of what you can accomplish.

I am at the house we painted. Here are photos of the hallway that we went over the paneling with beadboard on bottom and wallpaper on top.
And here are bedrooms.
Hope the photos (not very good on my phone) help you decide
