Debating whether to vault ceiling in family room
June 24, 2013 in Design Dilemma
We are remolding the entire first floor of our 50 year old house including adding on to the kitchen and are debating whether or not to vault the ceiling in the adjoining family room which will be opened up to the expanded kitchen. The house has 8 ft ceilings throughout. The cost would be about $5000 to do the ceiling.

How much will you have to spend to keep the extra air space heated in winter and cooled in summer? Adding a vaulted ceiling is similar to buying a piece of clothing that needs to be dry cleaned. The maintenance of the piece becomes more expensive than the piece itself over time. Other Houzzers will have different opinions.

Having a vaulted ceiling in my own family room, I would say the added spaciousness is well worth the cost. It also offers more architectural interest / value to a house that one cannot simply put a dollar amount on.

That seems really inexpensive! I would love to have extra height in my family room!

The extra height would be great and would add value to your home. Use caution to keep the proportions close so that you blow the room scale of your home.

Would have to have more information to make an opinion based on the issue. Each case is different. How is the new vaulted area going to tie into the new expanded kitchen? Is it going to flow together or is there going to be a beam separating the two areas? Will the vaults be in the same direction or will they be intersecting? Will they be the same height? Same finish? How will the vault in the family room relate to adjacent areas?

Personally, I'm wondering just how much vault you can get for $5000. What's the existing structural system over the family room? Trusses? Stick built?......... would need to see some sketches and more details to make a valid statement as to if it was a good idea or not.

We did a remodel with vaulted ceilings and would never do it again. We live in the north and the heating and cooling bills skyrocketed. Be sure to consult a good heat and air company to rerun your system or everything just becomes trapped and the inefficiency of your entire system is compromised. In addition, we made a second floor bedroom much smaller which we ultimately regretted also. In a warmer climate it would be better because it actually moves the heat up so cooler is not as expensive as trying to maintain an even heat in the winter.
