Need help choosing art! Also, any other recommendations for the room?

Can you please help me choose between the two pictures attached (and maybe explain your choice)? It would be so much appreciated!

Is the size/scale of the first picture appropriate for the area?

Photo #1, Abstract is my first choice. The poppies look a little too common.

#1. It has more warmth to it. The other looks too stark in a room with so much contrast already.

The above pictures may be a bit difficult to see so here are some close up photos as well :) Thanks for the comments so far!

Definitely the abstract. There is more depth and color and modern looking.

Thanks! I prefer the first one 200%. My boyfriend likes the poppies because he feels the other is too "messy" and that it looks like we could have painted it ourselves!

That's a great observation, that your boyfriend made. I hadn't noticed it that way, but... that being said, that could also be why I think the first one looks better in the room. Everything about the room is so completely structured, that it needs something a little "messy" or unstructured to soften it.

Right now, the room looks very masculine. Softness could come from the blending, and organic feel of the first painting. The second one is feminine, but since it uses fewer colors, it looses some of it's organic feel.

I also love the gallery wrap vs. the stark black frame.

Thanks. The room is definitely quite masculine. Any ideas for softening it up (besides the painting, which is here to stay!)? I have a fan of clean lines, structure, and simplicity, but we still need balance.

Prints and soft fabrics would help.

I love the less-is-more approach as well. If this was my room, I would change the coffee table for something made of wood. Glass and metal is very cold; when combined w/ leather, it feels even colder. I would also change out the b/w print for something with similar softness to the first print. Something w/ a gallery wrap and warmer colors.

BTW, I love the whole vignette that you have w/ the floating Besta. It's accessorized perfectly! :)

Thank you so much! This is the first time I've been able to design and decorate on my own. It's a small place and the less-is-more approach seems to work well here :) We're looking for a new coffee table (soon - budget permitting). I understand what you mean about the b/w print, but also really love it! I'll probably try to make it work another way :)

I know what you mean about the b/w print. I own one very similar, and have it sitting in a closet because of this exact reason. I feel that the images around you, affect the the energy in your home, so as nice of a photo as it is, it'll likely go on craigslist.

An example is the Ikea Premiar print by Skip Nall called, "Jungle Journey". I absolutely love that print, and my gf has it in her living room, on a vaulted ceiling, above her light grey-blue sectional. It looks absolutely stunning, but... the image itself is lonely and isolating. I've noticed a dip in her spirit since she bought it. It could simply be coincidence, but I'm not willing to take that chance.

I actually love your room and definitely prefer the first print! I think the coffee table is perfect. The couch is dark and rather heavy and the coffee table is the perfect balance. I have a lot of wood in my living room and just yesterday ordered a metal and glass table to help balance things out. The only thing I'd modify is maybe adding a couple patterned pillows rather than all solids. Very nice job!
