Bedroom Help

armygirl1987June 28, 2013
This is pretty much the last room in the house that I need to update. I have used Houzz for both my bathrooms, kitchen and living room. So here goes.
I live in South Florida. The room is roughly 11 by 14. I will be replacing laminate for tile. Got the go ahead to use the tile that I found. Wanted to match the tile in the bathroom but it only comes in a 13 by 13 this tile is a 10 by 24. I have already bought the bed and dresser, will be keeping the existing dresser but get it stained to match the dresser. Need help with nightstands, lighting, lamps, accessories, curtains, rugs (small). I also will need doors for closet. Just need help tying it all together. Thanks for your help. I can post more pictures of room.

Hahaha, all the nightstands are white and the lamps are pale. Maybe you could paint the old dresser a very pale blue or blue aqua like this one SW sea salt

Still like the PB teen Capiz globe pendants or maybe since you're using larger nightstands you want to look at a white lamp?

Nice things, Angela, those are my sea urchin lamps, except I bought woven lampshades at target. The pale aqua squared urn lamps and the one with the frosted glass and twine wrapped around it are very close to the soft pale tones in inspiration picture.

I'm here. Since the dresser will have items across it plus the mirror, I'm thinking solid colour (white, or whatever off-white(?) picks up the headboard) double drapery panels at the window, which will run the length of the wall, and an unobtrusive shade ( natural fiber to coordinate w floor or walls, or plain white roller), if you want, as well . JC Penney has 50% off right now. Drapery rod could be a faux bamboo, or dark wood, or lastly, a traverse that would be unseen.

The pendants can go as wide as 18" and still maintain a 5" border on both sides. As I mentioned earlier, by running the cord behind the drapery, they can plug into existing outlets. They should live in the same stylistic neighborhood as the table lamps for your bed (not match, though), which in turn depend on the nightstands being settled upon. The clear glass lamp styles above would go with almost anything...I secretly hope you knocked that painted seashell one on the floor - purely by accident, of course.

Think the pendant is cool, but too skinny. Especially now that you're using nice wide nightstand. If you're going for pendants instead of lamps, the pb Capiz globe pendant is probably better over nightstand.

That's lovely Angela, what a good mix of the colors I see when I think of your rooms, very welcoming and inviting. I think the colors in bedroom are all the same, but taken just a notch down and paled out. Like you've left you're vibrant, waking public space and slipped into a serene cocoon of paler coral, paler blue and a pale khaki or stone color. I think the lamps might be better off in a white, clear or frosted glass or an even a really, really pale blue, not as dark as the ones on lamps plus site. Maybe the palest blue in drapes, with a very sheer voile curtain inside, and then a pull down blind for night and privacy. I love that the colors when you arrive at front door are so vibrant, then you step inside and they are touch more subdued, when you enter bedroom it should become a pale sanctuary that you reach through a more vivid journey through the house. I know I sound like an idiot, but I think you know what I mean :)

I have the 2" white wood blinds throughout my entire house. Great for privacy, even if not fully closed. I have white trim, similar to yours and they look great. They kind of disappear during the day, tried to give you three views, one in the guest room, one in the kitchen area and third what they look like with curtains. I find them very veritable, but I really want some custom roman shades, but a bit out do my $$$ right now.

The more I think about it I think the bamboo(as long as the have a blackout liner) would pull your room together. You really have beautiful palate of earthy colors and I think white would ruin the "organic feel". Bamboo would look great behind that gorgeous bed.

But Nancy the window is on the bed wall as I recall, not sure white would look right with the linen colored headboard. I see the curtain rood running the entire length of the wall, two voluminous linen panels and hanging the blinds a bit above the window to give it height. Not sure that would work with white blinds. Looking for a pic now.

Hey hey ladies, I'm back, busy day, daughters friends visiting, more work to entertain than our own friends, lol. Angela, still prefer the look of clear glass or those cool wrapped frosted ones, I think they will add too that PE serenity I see in your inspiration pics. I agree with the gals that grommet isn't the best option, I like a fuller look for the bedroom. Like the bamboo blinds, some companies do them in a whitewashed or white finish, perhaps you might like that. I'm back in the AM, have a great night, Angela, Nancy, Margaret and Ann!!! :)

'Angela' RE: bedroom help . I didn't see the pic of the dresser. OMG that thread is crazy! From reading some, skipping some, skimming some, it's soooooooooo long. I'm liking the transformation. I've been seeing a lot of the same tonal values throughout. Are you keeping that feeling? There is a lot of texture, just wondering if it can be too much? Texture is good. I still don't have the visual of the final choices up to this point. I may have missed the final decisions on things. Can you post a recap of pics that are finalized. Looks like you have all the help you need.

Still think you could use a pale blue like SW sea salt if you wanted for the dresser. Or any of these that are just a touch bluer, names are on the bottom of pictures :)

I like the sea salt color mforr posted, but the neutral would work well too. I must say how pleased I am to have painted my nightstands even though it took so many hours. Even without the headboard in there yet, the room looks very, very different - much calmer and more relaxed (and less "country").

Ann, I love how your room is coming together, it's definitely losing the country look, and becoming sleeker, more urbane. Don't know if I posted it on you're thread, but I'm loving the knobs on the nightstands. Can't wait until the headboard is done, wish you didn't have such a long wait :(

Michele-I ordered, the white blinds, bamboo shades from Jc Penny last night beause I couldn't decide, along with Traverse Rods from Bed Bath and Beyond. I also got the clear lamp and rope from Home Goods. So hype to go home and see the floors tonight. Sucks that I have to go to the libray right after work So I have to suffer. Tried to get my daughter to text me pics but she left.

@ Angela, I'm leaning in a different direction. I like your 1st inspirational photo that you posted. Your dark framed tufted bed, bedding, restful walls, white duvet, rope lamp and soft warm colors of accents that you have and your new floor.
Guest Bedroom · More Info

I also like the Bernhardt beige studded linen night stand that you posted. Paint the the dresser the same beige. I like the feeling of that 1st photo. The room seems small and not real large. Another reason why I feel the overall coloring should be light. You can accent with some accessories in the dark tone of your bed frame. Maybe frames or other accessories.

If you went with the target burlap curtains then I would definitely say no to sea salt painted dresser and go with a color in that matches front of dresser. Then use blue in accents like artwork, ornaments or candles. If you use the pale blue in curtains, then I could see the dresser in the sea salt, with natural accessories like the mother of pearl boxes or driftwood branch candelabra. Either way, I could see the Capiz globe pendants with burlap cord cover or frosted wrapped lamp. So soft and soothing. Then you may never want to leave the room )

Well the bed gets delivered on Friday, got the confirmation call today. Hopefully the West Elm stuff comes in this week, the website said Wednesday. The curtain rods and stuff looks like it will be a while. The issue that I have with West Elm stuff is that I have to put it together, then I do and don't like it, what does that do for return. Would rather buy something that is put together and have a return policy if I need to.

We crossed again, Angela! Anyway, here in New Mexico just about all houses are on slabs, too. Our house is on an elevated crawlspace because we're on a floodplain of the Rio Grande. Never mind there hasn't been any floods in this neck of the woods in recorded history, LOL!

What did you think of the curtain itself, I thought it had the best of both worlds, white and blue. Plus they look pretty luxurious. And on sale. I'm still checking on traverse. Probably would look good on simple white wood rod though

Ok, not recommended to use regular drapes with traverse rod. In fact, unless you are using multiple panels for each side, or spending the money for pinch pleated drapes that have much more width to them, I wouldn't use traverse rod at all. When the drapes are clipped in, and you close them, they will appear flat and kind of cheap if they aren't super, super full. So something to think about. Simple wooden rod in a lighter wood to match front of dresser or white wood will probably be your best bet.

I don't think it would turn yellow, looks like its sort of dried and cured already. I'd imagine that's probably permanent finish, it might fade on the window side if there's a ton of sun on it, but the room side should remain pretty consistent.

Depends on whether you want to hang them inside mount or above window. Inside mount, get the exact measurement, outside, wide enough to cover window and frame and long enough to go higher than window, up closer to curtain rod. Gives a much cleaner look, no rectangles of wall showing plus it makes window appear larger.

These come in your width. I'm going to check a few more places to see if I can find something lighter. But the mirada is not as dark as it looks on the screen. Plus if you go with white or riviera (hint, hint) drapes, the contrast will look pretty nice. :)

I see you are also looking for drapes. I get my drapes from halfpricedrapes.com. Check it out. They usually have a coupon deal where you can get 10 fabric swatches of the drapes you like and think would work best with your decor. You would only have to pay for shipping and they usually include a 10% off coupon you can use towards your purchase.

Your choices for windows will be determined if you want the more casual 'feeling' or an understated goal toward simple casual elegance. It would be color and fabric choices that lead you to either direction.

One more thing about the halfpricedrapes.com...they currently have a buy 1 / get 1 free promotion. The drapes are very good quality. They are lined and interlined so they drape nicely.

You might like these grommet sheers. Bed Bath and Beyond. Texture is nice and will work nicely with your neutrals. For some reason the site does not have a zoom for these. 'View' it from a larger size.

Angela -- about rods.... whatever you choose, make them nice and thick and substantial... have a look at the rods my designer used on my drapes, they just make the curtains feel more... balanced and stable... than the skinny rods do.

Hey Angela, just waded through all of this and saw your dresser.I don't think you should have any trouble sanding it to get it ready for priming and painting it. It looks fairly flat and that makes it go a lot faster.

I love the stamped dresser. It fits you. Concerned about the height and length for a nightstand. Also, that it is quite golden for the other choices you've made. It may become a focal point of the room? But darn, I love it too.

LB, don't let the dressers I posted confuse you, these are what I'd like Angela to consider as the other nightstand, the one she bought with bed is going to be used as larger nightstand. Since she is moving bed to wall opposite the closet, she has more space. The long, older dresser is one that Angela has had for years and she will probably paint it. The stamped chest is one thing she is considering to go on wall to left of closet. Is that about right Angela?

Thanks for the clarification, somewhere along the line I missed that the bed was moving. I like the stamped dresser, but don't think it fits with the overall esthetic that Angela was building towards, I think the serenity would be violated with the stamped dresser and prefer the options that Mforr posted for nightstands. I think a simple understated elegance is required to not steal the show from that wonderful bed.

I agree, if the serene feeling is compromised too much, the feeling will get lost. The dark furniture is strong in it's focal with the room. If you use too many casual and complicated other elements, the feeling for the room will change.

@ Angela. I'm so sorry but maybe it's the terms that we are using that is confusing. To me .. a dresser is larger that a nightstand. A nightstand is smaller used as an end table. So can you post a pic of the 'dresser bought to use as a nightstand' I'm sorry. I'm all mixed up here.
Last question. Are the new pieces, the dark bed and a dark nightstand or a dark dresser, that were bought?

I would want the 'new 'nightstand to be the same height as the 3 drawer dresser/night stand. It wiil feel better especially in a somewhat small room. In addition, changing the design style of the nightstands may be a little too much going on, so at least the same height.

I do like the idea of walking in a room and having the focal wall opposite the entrance. Bed under the window does that. Flanked by nightstands and window panels. Will two nightstands fit, if bed were at the window? Will you be gainiing more space if the bed is on the windowless wall? Just curious. See your post 'Bedroom 3" as your inspiration.

Note: if you choose dark rods, they may be too much contrast for a serene room. You definately will see them especially the finials. If you don't want focal there, I'd maybe go with white or almond or beige.

Good night Michele-You know I told someone this last night. My family immigrated to the US when I was 17 years old and we had nothing, lived in my aunts attic for a while. I have never known how to give up. I always had to try harder and most of all give back. That is where it all comes. Thanks for that but no shopping tonight. Going to bed or at least try, tomorrow is a big day.

Angela, I have to agree you are a very special woman. I have always believed you get back in 10 fold what you give to the universe. My experience with hospice was incredible, made the grief bearable and anyone that is part of what hospice does is a living angel. Hope you know what it really means to the families. If you ever need a reminder let me know!

Angela, I am serious, Hospice is difficult long term, but I can tell you it is worthwhile, fist hand experience. Most difficult time in my life and I was able to accept the spiritual side of death. May sound easy to most, but it is not. Questioned why constantly and was able to accept and even find peace with it at the end. I did not know you were part of Hospice, knowing this now I have even more respect for you.

Him and his wife were married for 36 years but for a moment in time, I was able to get him to laugh and I sat with him, held his hands, rubbed his hair. He never complained. They both told me that I was special and that they were grateful. I was only with him for maybe ten minutes. It might sound corny but it makes me want to just do more.

I am not known as a sappy or even emotional person, my job demands that I be pretty thick skinned so please do not take my comments lightly, they are completely out of character. But what you describe is not corny, small gestures in the end mean more than any grand gesture throughout life. In my experience people walk away in fear at the end and leave people alone to live out the final moments of their lives. That is what makes Hospice and people like you so special. Enough sappy for me, I am so out of my comfort zone. :)

Margaret - you are sooooo right! I had a very tough relationship with my mom and I did kind of stay away in fear at the end. Some of the Hospice people and the staff at her Assisted Care facility were amazing and a few days before her death, she cried as one of them simply held her hand. I didn't, but they did and I'll remember that always.

Ann, I understand completely what you mean. I too have a difficult relationship with my mother and can only hope when the time comes I can leverage an angel (or Angela) to help me deal with it.

Ok back to the design, I sure hope Angela has purchased some nice soft sheets in all her shopping adventures, so she get have a wonderful first night sleep in that new bed tomorrow!

That is the original blinds so they will be replaced and that dresser updated. Not going to use the new dresser as night stand. Keep in kind the TV will be removed. What about dresser below where TV will be and then get two matching nightstands preferable round ones.

I like the 'wishire' nightstand for the left of the bed and maybe you can get something smaller for the right side of the bed for a nightstand that uses the soft color of the nightstand that we like?

Maybe you could DIY a floating shelf on the right side of the bed to work with whatever nightstand you choose?

I think I like the ginger throw the best, also when euros have bigger inserts and are standing up straight, then the coral silks can slouch a bit in front and the lumbar will have a deeper color behind it making it highlighted.

If you don't mind, just so we can see it, if you don't want that set up anymore I'll start looking for round ones again, just kind of liked the idea of big nightstand next to bed to offset the tall headboard. Plus a boatload of storage :)

Michele - Looks so nice! I like the new dresser on the closet wall too. I like the lamp on the older, larger dresser. I think not too big, round, open side tables would look great to keep the room from a "heavy" look since there is already enough solid furniture. Would there be room for a small upholstered chair in the room since it's always nice to have a chair in a bedroom?

Nancy - is the lamp size big enough? If used on nightstands, she'll need good sized lamps next to that substantial headboard. I'm thinking about 32". If that one is good sized, I think it's perfect.

I do like the large nightstand look next to bed. If you use the new dresser next to closet, I might consider getting a matched pair of larger nightstands with drawers, looks nice and substantial next to bed. With that tall headboard, I think you need some heft, nothing too spindly or small. But I'm only suggesting :)

It's 28 1/2" high. Depending on the nightstand, I think it would work. I was thinking of it replacing the glass-based lamp on the long dresser under the wondow, though, to bring a little of the orange over to that side of the room.

mforr - I see your point about nightstands, but don't you worry that the room could get a bit heavy and overcrowded since it isn't a huge room? Basically, there would end up being 4 dressers of various sizes. I'm wondering if that makes sense in a room that isn't quite large.

I think we need to ask a fundamental question here. What function do you need the nightstands to perform? Storage for... Decorative accent? Lamp and alarm clock holder?? What is it you need? Then let's consider options.

I know I am going to be in the minority here, but I love the blue glass lamp. Think it fits with the original design esthetic. Think it would bring another blue element to tie in the dresser. My vote would be Blue lamp by bed, white on large dresser and maybe, a beautiful pendant on the other side of the bed in a white similar to the lamp.

Sure, it's your room. I think you could find a nice slipper chair and it would look nice. Do you need two nightstands?

I like the first one Nancy, are they pricey. The fact that I am using the dresser as a night stand should suffice the alarm clock stuff. No, I do not need the two nightstand, think it is just because that was what I was used to. I would love to chair to read in my room sitting up versus in the bed.

It's up to you, do you like the symmetry of two nightstands with the pendants overhead or do you need a chair more than storage? You could put in slipper chair or a white or light tan ikea jennylund chair if you want something small or an ektorp chair if you want it bigger. Be warned, chairs often end up as a clothing dump, lol ;)

Okay guys have a study group at 730pm tonight so going to get ready for that. Hopefully, I can get the curtain rods put up tomorrow and then work on curtains. I also found some nice bamboo from Lowes today and hoping that they fit in the space. If they fit then I can return the ones that I bought from Penny. I have thirty days to return so I am going to keep the two white lamps and return the clear one.

Hi everyone,
I think I've caught it all. Just a reminder Angela of the 'feeling' that you want for the room. I see a lot of wood and dark woods. And possibly many furniture styles. Very strong orange accents. Great if that's the feeling.
Looks like it's moving in a new direction.

- What will be going with the wall color? The long dresser I think.
- about the orange, wonderful accent, is strong and dramatic,
- night stand 'cabinet' design, maybe too heavy for small room
- two matching end tables, small room, too many different furniture pieces.
- I like the light color round tables # 2 , less visual weight, open design, not all rectangles in the room
- I like table # 4 (if they are tall enough, 26"-28"), open design, lighter visual weight, like the contrast base
- I like pendants for bed - lamps for dresser, not all lamps
- I like the shams and pillows, love the bird oblong
- I think you need more blue in the room, lamps or accessories.
- orange and blue colors of items do not have to be the same saturation. I like lights and darker tones together

For drama - orange pillows and orange throw, orange lamps, light or dark tables, midtone drapes or orange, white ceiling fan (get lost in ceiling) dark if want strong accent
- dark bed frame

For serene - print shams, no solid orange pillows, have to have bird pillow, green throw, light tables, #2 or #4 or ? , soft color drapes, soft coral print, white ceiling fan or white and nickel
- dark bed frame (focal point)

I sure agree with LB about matching end tables - #2 light color round ones are definitely my favorite. I do also think pendants are a good idea for bed area with lamps or lamp for the dresser.

Just got back in looking over stuff and realize that I want serene, understated elegance. I just got rid of orange paint in room. I think that was why I chose that sheet set in the first place. I agree with bringing in blue as accents and did pick up some curtains today to see how they will look just did not get around to putting them up. I am not feeling the dresser as night stand, like the dresser better on closet wall, just think that it is too much against the bed and so heavy. #4-Diameter: 26.00" Height: 26.00"----#2-Diameter: 28.00" Height: 26.25"-Current dresser. Still want to use pendant as light over night stands and lamp or lamps for dresser. @LB-are you saying go with the two matching night stands. I just think that it will be easier to get two matching nightstand than getting one nightstand to match dresser unless I go with one round.

I think you should just get the matching nightstands for good symmetry, I love different mix of furniture in room, but nightstands are the one exception. I know it's been fashionable for a while, but many times I think it looks kind of thrown together. Most people's eyes like to see things evenly, it feels right to them. I may not like the round little nightstands, I think they're too small for your large headboard, but if you get them, I think it shoul be matched. I agree with the pendants over nightstands, keep in mind, the larger the pendant, the nightstand top shouldn't be too small. Also keep in mind that tiny pendants will look silly next to big headboard. I still like the orange touches on bed. But would not put them anywhere else. The rest should be the pale blue, white and light naturals you've looked at. But the pillows and orange throw can stay. That makes the bed as a whole the focal point. Ceiling fan should definitely be white or pale silver, no wood tones or darkness on ceiling. I haven't seen the two white lamps on long dresser but I think that's where they should go. Like new dresser next to closet, don't know if it needs a lamp at all, but if it does, still think that blue is too dark. Don't think you need anything on the current tv wall except a serene piece of art.
Thinking of nightstands, has anyone seen any oval ones? You'd get the feeling of roundness but the elongated shape that would be more in proportion with the bed.

Yes, something like that. I'm thinking the same size all the way down, with shelves. Sort of like a serving cart, but oval and a bit more substantial. I know there must be some out there, I can see them in my mind, just have to find them in my iPad, lol. Also should be a lighter color. I think just Angela's bed and the new dresser should have the darkest wood tones, everything else should be light colored, SERENITY is the word of the day for us on our searches :)

If it makes things easier it does not have to be oval table but we could bring in the oval/round with the pendants. I have been looking at pictures with the bed and they all have non oval nightstand. I am going to see what the measurements for the nightstands that come with the bed is and that should give us some better measurements. Joss Main has some nice pieces on sale now.

OK, after this I'll shut up about it, but I'm still very much liking the round two toned table Angela found (one for each side of the bed). It's not a small table as has been mentioned - 28" in diameter is good sized and the height is good too at just over 26". I know Angela is thinking pendants which would be very nice (I agree), but if that requires too much electrical/drywall work, those 28" round tables would accommodate nice big lamps. I think a pair of those round tables is the best nightstand idea yet in working with all the other things in the room.

I think blue paint or a beige shade like the front of the dresser, just a little lighter. I'm boring but if it were me, I might go with a light neutral paint and use accessories to add the blue.
