1850's fireplace in kitchen
Tanya MessinaJune 29, 2013
Ok. So I was hoping to clean this original fireplace and leave it in its "natural" state in my kitchen. But, after removing all of the paint, this is what we were left with. Funds have dried up, so refacing with stone isn't an option. I'm leaning towards just repainting it white but figured I'd ask the experts for other ideas ...

Wow, that's a great accent in any room.

If it had been me, I probably would have stopped and left the bottom "log holder" area. Did you save the bricks so you can rebuild that? I think it balanced the wall and made the fireplace box, in the middle of the bricks "make sense". You could store logs in it, or put nice decor down there like period vases or pitchers. Does the fireplace & the exhaust functions work?

What will the rest of the decor in the room look like? You said it's the kitchen, what style will you be going with?

No matter what, it should be painted. I'd paint it white to match the walls, or an accent color that goes with the rest of the decor in the room. You'll need to prime first. I don't think you need a mantle, but I'd find a nice large statement piece of art or mirror to place over the firebox opening.

I can't wait to rip out our over sized Hearth and add a log box under it. So i would keep that open too.The timber beam suggest a rustic heavy mantle where you could hang antique ( or reproduction) kitchen ware. The stone hearth will look great against white painted brick. Think of an old lime washed cottage.
We do cast iron cooking, and find a lot of the tools in sporting goods catalogs and stores. You could do a great Dutch oven cobbler or stew in that fireplace. Whether you used them or not, the iron works would look good.

Thanks for the suggestions! We are still in progress, but we've painted it white & opened up the box below the fireplace. Last step is to hang the tv ... Much improved!!

Toonia ... The paint color is Benjamin Moore's Coventry Gray - HC-169. It looks gorgeous with the White Dove cabinetry and trim and the jet mist and Vermont white stone on the counters and island.
