Need help with front entry and updating exterior of lake home.

This house was originally built in 1959 then remodeled in 1985. I want to update and give the exterior and entry some interest.

Here's a quick fix. Black front door, as I think you have, plus add black urns.

I like the soothing soft color, so why not remove the rocks along the front and replace with plants? Look how beautiful the little tree in the tub is!

There is nowhere for people or the eye to linger except the pergola. Brighten the front door to make it stand out and either furnish the pergola or make a porch around the front door in the spirit of the trim around the L hand window.

Get those windows mullioned. They date the house to the 80s more than anything.

Take off the funky trim around the far left window - plant on to brick. Add some evergreen vines at the base of the front pergola post nearest the entry door and train it up and over so it will green in over time.

I would paint the sidelights the same as the front door to draw attention, and use a dramatic but traditional chinese red - that will pull your eye there.

From here, you just need some new landscape design - the house would be wowsa then. The planting beds all seem to have small boulders / large rocks. While you could leave them, and perhaps add succulents and agave type elements, the rest of the yard doesn't indicate this is a desert site. Consult your nurseryman for great local native flowering shrubs that will produce color at different times of the year or talk to a residential landscape designer in your community.

I too think you get rid of the frame around the far left window and maybe add some window boxes. Add a piece of art to the wall between the two windows. How about a Blood Red Japanese Maple and some mounding plants around the rock bed.

Red Berm
It looks like a lot of gravel by the entry door. Would you think of any bulbs or shrubs?

Definitely! Great suggestion. Originally the rock was put down for no-maintenance landscaping. Time for a change with plantings, greenery.
