i truly detest split-level houses from the front. all you see are the big, ugly garage doors. could everyone please post pics of solutions to the ugliness that you have seen or done yourselves? i would be most grateful! this would make for a good article, Houzz writers!

I've seen some ugly split levels turned into beautiful contemporary homes. Here's one in my city that stands out:,-122.451778&cbp=13,48.9,0,0,0&cbll=47.269847,-122.452152&sa=X&ei=1l3QUdKwEIqyiQKQnIHACg&ved=0CCwQxB0wAA

The only thing one could do is the staircase since that is the first thing one sees upon entering the house.

to emily--i love what you posted. it seems that the most successful way to go is to pull the eye away from the garage doors as much as possible. the beautiful replacement doors would be a great idea if my daughter could afford them. this is her first house--young and single. we will be doing the work ourselves, out of budget necessity!

I live in a five level split that I designed and built 4 years ago. We love the function of split levels, so the biggest challenge was the exterior. Although the garage is still front and center, I'm still very pleased with the results. Other pics are posted on Houzz if you'd like to see the interior. Search for Dory Azar.

believe me, if my daughter's house looked anything like the one in the pic, i would be ecstatic! this is not what most of us think of when we think split level, though. it's always a house on a hill with the driveway cut into the slope accompanied by ugly retaining walls of some unimaginative material. most often, there is a swath of faux stone or brick somewhere. you know the ones i mean, i'm sure!

I think the things you could do for curb appeal that wouldn't be terribly expensive would be to add some nice landscaping, that give it a more modern feel, maybe upgrade the front door and mailbox with something modern, and add a cool contemporary trellis above the garage. I think those things would go a long way.
