I think you want to make sure you do not add too many items and make it look cluttered. Maybe just a few larger items.....is there anything that is representative of your town, location etc....maybe a picture of the city, or the seaside?

Basement Bathroom

Towels, soaps, hand cream, lots of decorative, but useful items.

Built in desk/Reading nook

Another end table and reading iight.

Comfy bedding and more pillows. And a clock and flowers.

Traditional Bed Pillows

That does not look comfortable to sit up and read in. Is that the only location for the bed? Can you put a reading chair there and books on the shelf along with other items. I do like the built in but not as a headboard.

Are you able to reposition or remove the shelves at all?

I would paint the background of the shelving unit the color of the lamp shade. Add a couple books laid flat but stacked. Maybe a sleep mask in a fun print, and a pretty lotion dispenser. Leave a personalized note on the shelf pertaining to the guest;)

I would either paint the back of the shelves along the same tone as the blue spread or mirror it and fill it with things a guest would enjoy; apothecary jars of cotton balls, q-tips, baskets with individually wrapped Milano cookies, chocolate, stacks of washcloths, poetry books. For the bed some patterned shams for the pillows and a couple of decorative throw pillows.

I would inset some padded fabric panels to make it an upholstered headboard.

I'd center the bed with the bookcase and do floating shelves on each side of the bed. Modern sconces hung on the wall will free up the end table space. Books on the bookcase in various up/down would look cozy. Then, a piece of art hung above the bed, as if there was no bookcase there would look nice.

I agree that it doesn't look comfortable and would feel weird to have a bunch of stuff in it. Also, the shutters don't add anything. I'd move the bed to anywhere else, then fill the shelves with books etc.

Do you have the option of placing the bed up against a blank wall in the room?
