Should under cabinet lighting be toward front of cabinet or back?

We are in our 60's and both do meal prep in our 1962 kitchen which is a SMALL U-shaped with NO kitchen window! With our remodel we want a white or pale! color subway tile backsplash and non-shiny laminate counter top, light oak cupboards. Will shiny backsplash be too much glare with under cabinet lighting? Over sink will have cupboard with shelf under....should we use the same under cabinet lighting there? Sorry so many questions!! Thanks! Loved this lighting section for ideas & put some in my idea Book!

joellenskitchen,
With the lack of light in the kitchen, we would recommend fixtures that mount towards the front of the cabinet. This will put more foot candles (light intensity) towards the front of the counter tops where the majority of work is performed, and will create more of a soft glow towards the rear (no glare off the tiles).

A rear mount fixture will still give off sufficient light across the counter surface, but may also cause more of a glare off of the gloss tiles. The same lighting under the cabinets can be used over the sink area. Just be sure to check into the local building codes to make sure that it is not a problem to do so.

Thank you for your interest,

The Kichler Team
