Frustration - Garage access through garden.
Det Detta
July 3, 2013 in Design Dilemma
I love our new home, but the only frustration is the garage is accessible through the garden. Thinking about the possibility of building a garage at the front of the house. This will increase the size of the garden and maybe remove the ugly garage door and put a sliding door instead :) ...
Would appreciate your views and suggestions... cannot get my head around picturing a garage standing on the right side of the house....

First, I will say that a lot of people complain that their big ugly garage door has to be in the front of the house. Second, do you have enough room? Some restrictions require 10 feet on one side of the house to the property line. And usually 5 foot minimum. I can't see where the property might end, though.

Thank you for your thoughts. Will look into the requirements with the planning department. Technically there is over 5 metres which is small perhaps :(. I'd love to be able to change the paving instead of cobblestones in the garden ... i just hate cobblestones.

You like them? You think they give value to a property?

I LOVE cobblestones! They remind me of old Philadelphia. They add a lot of class and style to an exterior. So if this is the back of your house, then you need to drive around just to get to the garage? That's awkward!

Do you need a garage for your car? If you don't, I love your idea of a sliding glass door, or you can make it a bit ritzier looking with French doors.

Just not fond of mowing and weeding :) I think it looks good there.

olldbobbi - yes just down the ramp and into the garage. that's the only drawback... i guess you cannot have it all. And as Fred S said some would love to have it this way, not me though :).
