I would remove the upper open shelving and paint the lower portion while installing a screen in front of the radiator.

I would start by painting it the wall color. And then covering the radiator with a wooden vent- like this but paint it out. over.

Now I'm wondering if i should leave it alone since its original woodwork in an arts and crafts style home built in 1933?thoughts?

From photo, I am not seeing signs of it being original woodwork from 1930s. Looks more current & plainer than it should????

You think it was added later? I have no clue... It's a house we're buying

Does house description say anything? I am familiar with arts & crafts style homes built in 30's & the woodwork is usually more detailed. Would like to hear from a finishing carpenter? It is not particularly striking - no architectural features stand out, so I would not hesitate to replace it or add some features to it.

The description says all original woodwork but i dont think this looks very nice... Maybe painting would help and i cant decide what to put on the shelves. I was thinking of putting a bench above the radiator....?

If you don't know what you want to put on shelves, then you don't need them. What about creating a window seat for reading, etc. Not sure what room this is? I assume dining room, but window seat would work there if you want. Or just have heater covered & see how room develops after you move in & start placing your furniture.
