Faux wood, Can it really look like wood?
Dimonti's Decorative FinishesJuly 3, 2013
A front door says so much about a home. Most people can't afford a solid wood door, way too costly. Here is an option if done correctly. I used paint and glaze to look like wood. Let me know your thoughts.

I have seen this done utilizing a gel stain over a metal or fiberglass door. Then clear coated with a sealer. The final effect is very dependent on the skill of the painter.

I do murals and faux finishes and I would say job well done. You pulled off the illusion of wood. Good job.

Thank you everyone. I would not use gel stains, not a fan of it. I haven't found one that is water based which is my preference. I used Stix primer and an exterior latex paint. I don't remember what color but, yellow base, then gradually built up color using exterior rated stain's. Almost every layer was sprayed on (except when glazed) and most of the products used were from General Finishes.

Really beautiful. Nice rich colors and subtle blending to look very natural.

Sure, but how costly is that job and how long does it last?

Its not costly.... it happens to be the least expensive option available, I guarantee it. It's as durable as any other finish out there.
