Refinish Curved open stair!
July 6, 2013 in Design Dilemma
We have purchased a house that is 30 years old and want to refinish the main stair case. At the same time we are installing consistent hardwood throughout the house, red oak colour Saxon Grey.
For the stair case we have decided to replace the pickets with modern square white ones, however my dilemma is should we keep the risers and treads the same colour as the hardwood or go with white risers which is what I see in most pictures? You'll also see that the stringer(the sides of the stairs) is currently oak, should this match the riser? I like the idea of this being stained to match the hardwood but am not sure if this would look funny if we go with white risers.
We'll also be installing a runner on the stairs, likely a modern geometric print.
Feedback greatly appreciated!
Pics are from before we have moved in.

I think it will look great if the risers match the treads and the rest of the flooring. Good luck with your project!

If you browse the Houzz photo section and type in something like "staircase" in the search box, lots of pictures come up that may give you an idea for the look you'd like to achieve:
