Are there any good "how-to" videos on how to do this?

My wife and I live in a small home that has a woefully plain flat front face, and entrance. The house (and the front door) are perfectly situated for a portico, however.

But I'm not great at carpentry. I can do some simple rough-in type work, but finished stuff like this is far beyond my skill level. I was hoping I could get a little bit of a tutorial, or some tips on how to accomplish a project like this, and get a finish that looks AT LEAST serviceable, and won't fall off the house. Any ideas?

Greg, I was the same way until a friend of mine and I bought an 1865 school house and worked every weekend for 4 years renovating it. http://www.crisparchitects.com/publications/hbweekend.html

I read a lot of fine home building magazines. Taunton press the publisher has a great web site.
Honestly, you learn by doing. We just always made our first attempts in the least visible part of the project.
