Does a covered patio directly off the great room cause the room to be too dark?

It can darken the room but it can also keep it cooler in the summer. You might consider a roof with sky lights over the portion of the patio closest to the great room.

You would notice a difference if there isn't a covered patio before.

Hi klahti -- It depends. Yes, it will get lower light from that direction, but that's not always a bad thing, especially if it's on the south side of your home.

I have a great room with lots of glass to the north and south and a little to the east. A pergola attached over the south facing windows has perhaps reduced the light a bit, but the glare a lot -- which is good.

Also, I've carefully trained trumpet vines over it, so it provides shade, flowers, and a great place for the birds in summer through fall, then the light can filter through in winter when the foliage is gone. And my view from the interior has a beautiful frame.

If losing light is the concern then an open beam pergola structure might be the answer. It can be covered with Lexan Twin Wall polycarbonate to allow light in but, keep the underneath from the elements. Here is an example of a covered outdoor kitchen, this structure is attached to the house, it's north facing.
