I have been recently informed that 12X24'' tile can be laid in a brick pattern @ 33% offset only NOT 50% . Is this true?

I can't see any reason why that would be true. What was the explanation?

I have heard that as well because of the possibility of lipping (lippage?). That being said I have 12x24 laid in a 50% brick pattern with no problems.

I was told due to the size, they are never totally flat on bottom and therefore cannot be laid in 50% pattern
