Interesting fireplace, looks art deco. What is the texture of the mantle and sides?

it seems like it's some type of knock down texture.

A black, gray, white marble would be nice. Or large glass tiles.

You could cover the entire fireplace with a stone veneer to provide an easy update. If you went floor to ceiling, it would create the visual of a larger space in the room. You can choose a custom color that blends in with your paint and decor too.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!! I really love all of your ideas. @KADesign Inc. It is the original finish. All the walls in the house were already textured when we purchased it.

I agree, remove the entire thing & send it back to the 80's where it belongs!
